Identifying the gap
Initial research
After an initial research it became obvious that no module exists which combines an immersive experience of learning about sustainability aspects when traveling for English speaking kids aged 6-12 years. Nevertheless, I want to share this collection of useful education material in case anybody wants to dig deeper into sustainability and use additional material:
Recommended resources
- Learning module from myclimate; target group: older students 17+; language: German
- Information material from EPIZ – global learning to plan a sustainable school trip; target group: students 9 – 12; language: German
- Workshop ideas for teaching different aspects about sustainable travel provided by Naturefriends spanning several weeks; target group: 14-18; language: German
- Boardgame for sustainable travel behavior in Austria developed by the federal ministry of education; target group: 14 +; language: German
-
Serious online Game focusing on Children Rights in Tourism provided by ecpat; target group: 15+; language: English
Drawbacks of existing sustainable travel education material:
- Limited availability in English
- Most material in English focuses solely on the transport neglecting all other fields of sustainable tourism
- Lack of evaluation and effectiveness measurement
- Inadequate focus on 6-12-year-old children
- Failure to connect school exercises with real-world applications
- Absence of interactive simulations for immersive learning
- Lack of role-play characters and gamification benefits
- No change of perspective and responsibility given to children
Booklet & Simulation for young students
Based on the identification of the huge gap, I decided to design a booklet and simulation game to involve students in shaping their own trip learning about sustainable behavior.
